Biography
Desmond Carter
Desmond Carter (1895–1939) was a British lyricist and writer best known for his work during the golden age of musical theatre and early British film. Active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, Carter collaborated with some of the most prominent composers of the time, contributing lyrics that combined elegance, wit, and lyrical sophistication.
Carter’s most notable collaboration was with American composer George Gershwin. He penned the original lyrics to “A Foggy Day (in London Town)” for the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress, which starred Fred Astaire and was scored by George and Ira Gershwin. Though Ira Gershwin typically wrote lyrics for his brother, Desmond Carter was brought on for the London-based film, showcasing his ability to match Gershwin’s urbane musical style with equally polished words.
In addition to film work, Carter wrote lyrics for various stage revues, musicals, and popular songs in Britain. He was part of a vibrant transatlantic exchange during a time when British musical theatre was heavily influenced by American jazz and show tunes.
While his life and career were relatively short—he died in 1939—Carter’s work reflects a key moment in early 20th-century songwriting, bridging British charm with the evolving style of modern musical theatre. His contributions, particularly his collaboration with the Gershwins, remain a lasting part of musical history.
