Lisa Lambert
Lisa Lambert is a Canadian composer, lyricist, and performer best known for her inventive, genre-savvy contributions to contemporary musical theatre. Born in Washington, D.C., Lambert began her career as a performer and cabaret artist, developing a musical voice rooted in wit, versatility, and a deep understanding of theatrical style. Her work often blends sharp humor with emotional authenticity, allowing her to move fluidly between parody and sincerity. As a composer, she is particularly admired for her ability to evoke specific musical eras while maintaining a modern sensibility.
Lambert achieved international recognition as one of the creators of The Drowsy Chaperone, composing the music and lyrics alongside Greg Morrison. Originally conceived as a small-scale parody, the musical grew into a Broadway hit in 2006, winning multiple Tony Awards, including Best Original Score. Lambert’s score was praised for its affectionate pastiche of 1920s musical theatre, seamlessly capturing the conventions of the era while supporting character and storytelling. In addition to her work behind the scenes, Lambert also performed in early productions of the show, reinforcing her reputation as a multifaceted theatre artist.
Beyond The Drowsy Chaperone, Lambert’s most prominent works include Minsky’s (music and lyrics), a musical exploring the birth of American burlesque; The Big Time, a jazz-inflected musical comedy; and contributions to Canadian theatre and cabaret performance. She has also maintained a career as a performer and recording artist, often appearing in concert and theatrical settings. Lambert’s body of work reflects a strong commitment to musical storytelling, stylistic precision, and a playful yet heartfelt approach to the musical theatre form.
