Biography
Greg Morrison
Greg Morrison is a Canadian composer, lyricist, and musician best known for his work in musical theatre and his long-standing creative partnership with Lisa Lambert. Based in Toronto, Morrison has built a career that blends sophisticated musical craft with a strong sense of theatrical style. His compositions are notable for their versatility, drawing on jazz, early musical theatre traditions, and popular song forms, often infused with humor and emotional clarity. Morrison’s background as a keyboardist and arranger has strongly influenced his ability to write music that is both character-driven and structurally precise.
Morrison achieved widespread recognition as the co-composer and lyricist of The Drowsy Chaperone, created with Lisa Lambert. The musical began as a small parody project and evolved into a Broadway production in 2006, where it earned critical acclaim and multiple Tony Awards, including Best Original Score. Morrison’s work on the show was praised for its skillful pastiche of 1920s musical theatre, capturing period style while supporting modern storytelling and character development. His contributions helped establish the musical as a landmark example of affectionate satire in contemporary theatre.
In addition to The Drowsy Chaperone, Morrison’s most prominent works include Minsky’s (music and lyrics, with Lambert), which explores the early days of American burlesque, and The Big Time, a jazz-inspired musical comedy. He has also worked extensively as a composer, arranger, and musical director in Canadian theatre, contributing to revues, cabaret performances, and new musical development. Morrison’s career reflects a commitment to musical precision, collaborative storytelling, and a deep appreciation for the history and evolution of musical theatre.
