Joe Iconis

Joe Iconis is an American composer, lyricist, and playwright. He is known for his rock musicals, cabaret-style pieces, and concerts. He performs with the Joe Iconis Rock and Roll Jamboree at The Laurie Beechman Theater, Joe's Pub, and Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City.

Iconis was born in Garden City, New York. He graduated NYU in 2003 with a B.M. in music composition.

The Black Suits, centered around a Long Island high school garage band, was first staged at SPF at The Public Theatre in June 2008. It was next performed at the Barrington Stage Company's Musical Theatre Lab from in August 2012, and received its world premiere at the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles in October 2013. The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks was produced by TheaterWorksUSA and played Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre from July through August 2008. Iconis' rock concert Things To Ruin has been staged at Ars Nova (2007), Joe's Pub (2007), the Zipper Factory (2008 and 2009), and Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theatre (2009); a cast recording was released in September 2010.

Iconis received acclaim for his Off-Broadway rock musical Bloodsong of Love: The Rock'N'Roll Spaghetti Western. The show opened at Ars Nova in April 2010, and Iconis received nominations for the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Book of a Musical.

Be More Chill, a musical adaptation of the popular YA novel by Ned Vizzini, premiered at the Two River Theatre in June 2015. An Off-Broadway production opened at the Pershing Square Signature Center on July 26, 2018. The Broadway production began previews on February 13, 2019 and opened March 10. Be More Chill was nominated for the 2019 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Score. A film adaptation has been announced.
