Biography
Eric Price
Eric Price is a multi-talented American writer, lyricist, director, and educator whose work spans musical theatre, adaptations, and original storytelling. He earned significant recognition in 2018 when, alongside collaborator Will Reynolds, he received the prestigious Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Writing. Price holds degrees in directing from Indiana University and musical theatre writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He also served for twelve years as the longtime assistant to legendary producer-director Hal Prince, which helped shape his understanding of musical storytelling.
As a lyricist and bookwriter, Price has created several notable musicals, including The Violet Hour, Radioactive, Presto Change-o, Around the World, Hello Out There, and The Sixth Borough. His adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma!—a contemporary pop musical—has been produced around the world, with over 150 productions to date. His work has been showcased at prominent venues including Manhattan Theatre Club, the Goodman Theatre, The Kennedy Center, and Symphony Space, demonstrating his broad appeal across both regional and national stages.
Price contributed additional material to the stage adaptation of the film Clue, officially titled Clue: On Stage. While the primary script was adapted by Sandy Rustin, Price played a key role in enhancing the show’s structure and dialogue, helping bring the fast-paced comedic murder mystery to life for theatrical audiences. Clue: On Stage has become one of the most produced plays in American high schools and community theatres, thanks in part to its faithful yet theatrical translation of the cult-classic film.
In addition to his creative work, Price is a respected educator. He teaches musical theatre writing and performance as an adjunct professor at Pace University and CAP21/Molloy College. He is also the co-founder of This MT Space, an online platform that offers resources and tools for musical theatre students and professionals. His dual role as a creator and teacher allows him to nurture the next generation of writers and performers, blending professional insight with hands-on mentorship.
Eric Price’s career reflects a deep commitment to both innovation and education in musical theatre. Whether he’s writing original musicals, adapting well-known stories for the stage, or guiding students in the craft of performance and writing, his work is marked by intelligence, humor, and a clear love of the art form. His contributions to Clue: On Stage and beyond continue to resonate with audiences and artists alike.
