Pertinax Surly is a gamester (card shark) and a pimp. He is an acquaintance of Sir Epicure Mammon and comes with him to see Subtle, the ‘Alchemist’. As his name suggests, Surly is ill-tempered and cynical, and quickly cottons on to the fact that Subtle and Face are con men.
