Overview
Analysis
Handsome Romeo Montague is an idealist. He has very strong notions about the nature of love, and when we meet him, he seems very enamored of the idea of love itself. He waxes poetic about his feelings for the elusive Rosaline, who does not seem to return his affections.

Editor Picks & Commentary
Romeo is often misplayed as simply “lovesick,” but his defining trait is intensity — whatever he feels, he feels completely. In your audition, avoid playing him as gloomy or passive. Even in despair, he is active: searching, questioning, deciding. Show his emotional speed — he falls in love fast because he lives fast. Let the audience see his imagination at work; Romeo doesn’t just experience love, he poeticises it. His language should feel like thought turning into music.
