Adrian College

About

At Adrian College in Michigan, the Theatre program—housed within its Department of Performing Arts—offers a highly collaborative and hands-on undergraduate experience. Students explore all aspects of theatre production, including acting, directing, playwriting, scenic and lighting design, costumes, makeup, props, and stage management. Whether you’re casting your own one-act play or launching an improvisational troupe, faculty mentorship supports creative ambition and development at every level.

The curriculum balances foundational coursework—such as Theatre Workshop I–IV, Acting I & II, Stagecraft, Play Directing, Stage Management, Playwriting Workshop, and Production Design (scenery, lighting, costumes/makeup)—alongside flexible opportunities for independent study and internships. Special topics like dramatic literature, theatre history, advanced acting, and capstone research with presentations further enrich the academic experience.

In addition to academic rigor, the program stages multiple major productions each year—commonly including one musical and three straight plays—plus a festival of student-written 10‑minute plays. These performances, many hosted in the campus’s historic Dawson Auditorium (a 1,000-seat, high‑acoustics venue), provide both onstage and backstage experience for all interested students.

Graduates often pursue careers in diverse theatrical roles including acting, directing, playwriting, design, stage management, and theatre education. The program builds practical skills, creative leadership, and professional readiness. Many alumni also gain recognition through participation in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and secure internships with venues ranging from regional playhouses to internships in Chicago, Boston, and London.
