Albany State University

About

Albany State University’s Theatre Arts program resides within the Department of Visual & Performing Arts and offers a B.A. in Theater (concentration within Visual & Performing Arts). This generalist degree provides foundational training in acting, directing, design, technical theatre, dramaturgy, and theatre education. Students are encouraged to experiment and explore theoretical principles both in and outside class—preparing them for careers in performance, education, arts management, or graduate study. Successful completion requires a minimum grade “C” in all theatre courses.

The program functions as an active production laboratory, presenting three fully staged main-stage productions annually, plus campus touring shows. Productions span classics, contemporary playwrights, and varied styles—offering students immersive roles in acting, technical design, and management. These productions often tour both the university learning community and the broader Albany community.

Albany State is also the 2024 host of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) for Region IV, welcoming students and artists from across eight states. This event highlights ASU’s growing engagement with national theatre networks and offers students professional critique, workshops, and showcase opportunities.

The program is situated in ASU’s Fine Arts Center, a modern 80,000 sq ft facility housing classrooms, offices, rehearsal spaces, a gallery, and notable performance venues including a proscenium auditorium and a black-box studio theatre. This building significantly enhances learning and production resources for students.

ASU theatre alumni frequently pursue roles in professional theatre, arts administration, design, education, or communication. The program emphasizes transferable skills—collaboration, creativity, technical competence—which equip graduates to contribute in regions across Georgia and beyond. Students also benefit from scholarships and experiential mentorship opportunities
