University of Saint Francis

About

The Theatre program at the University of Saint Francis is grounded in a liberal arts setting enriched by Franciscan values. The program fosters creativity, collaboration, and ethical storytelling through immersive, hands-on learning experiences. Whether students aim to perform, design, direct, or explore theatre as part of a broader academic path, the program is designed to be flexible and inclusive, allowing them to tailor their engagement based on their goals and interests.

Courses within the program span a range of theatrical disciplines, including acting, stage design, technical theatre, and performance analysis. Students build foundational and advanced skills through classes in lighting, costuming, set construction, theatre history, and production. Practical learning is emphasized, with coursework tied directly to performance projects and backstage work, ensuring that students apply theory in real-world environments.

A major asset to the program is the Resinski Black Box Theatre located in the Connors Family Fine Arts Center. This dynamic, intimate performance space offers students a platform for both traditional and experimental work, encouraging artistic risk-taking and cross-disciplinary collaboration. It also serves as a creative hub where theatre, music, and visual arts intersect.

Beyond campus productions, the theatre program engages the broader community through initiatives like the Jesters ensemble—a long-running creative group that brings together individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for collaborative performance. Students involved in this program gain valuable experience in inclusive arts education and community outreach, deepening both their artistic and personal development.

Theatre at Saint Francis is designed to complement other academic disciplines, allowing students to integrate performance studies with majors in music technology, education, communication, or visual arts. The program supports both minors and individualized paths of study, giving students the opportunity to build a well-rounded academic and creative portfolio that reflects their personal aspirations.
