University of Mount Union

About

The University of Mount Union’s Department of Performing Arts offers a dynamic Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with three distinct concentrations: Performance, Musical Theatre, and Design/Technical. The curriculum blends theatre history, theory, literature, and criticism with hands‑on learning—students engage directly in acting, directing, set construction, lighting, costumes, props, and stage and sound management under the guidance of faculty who continue to work professionally in the field.

Each academic year, Mount Union stages a variety of productions—including musicals, comedies, dramas, and student-directed one-acts—open to students campus-wide regardless of major. The program also features an exciting summer festival, Shakespeare at the Castle, where students perform alongside professionals at Alliance’s historic Glamorgan Castle . Performers, designers, and stage crew gain campus-wide production experience, while internships with organizations like Guthrie Theatre, Ohio Light Opera, and Cleveland Playhouse offer advanced professional exposure.

The department is housed within the modern Giese Center for the Arts, featuring the 450-seat Brush Performance Hall and a flexible black box Gallaher Theatre, along with dedicated rehearsal, costume, and scene shop facilities. Alongside faculty mentorship and a collaborative culture, student organizations—most notably Mount Union Players—provide additional hands-on and creative opportunities. With its strong liberal arts foundation, professional training, and diverse performing opportunities, University of Mount Union’s theatre department prepares students for a wide range of careers in theatre, film, television, or graduate study—all within a supportive, inclusive community environment.
