About

Liberty University’s Department of Theatre Arts offers a hands-on theatre education framed by a Christian worldview, empowering students to “tell the stories that shape our culture” through faith-infused training. The department offers multiple degree options: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting, BFA in Musical Theatre, and Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts, along with a minor in Dance and Theatre Arts open to students campus-wide. Admission to the two BFA tracks requires a faculty audition and is limited in size, emphasizing intensive and personalized training.

The Theatre Arts curriculum blends foundational studio instruction with applied production work. Students study acting, directing, playwriting, stage management, theatre history, Christian aesthetics, and production design, with professional faculty guiding coursework in areas like voice, dance, stage combat, movement, and design. BA/BS students enjoy greater flexibility through electives and cognate options, while BFA tracks focus more deeply on performance and technical expertise.

Students gain abundant practical experience through six academic productions each year staged in the Tower Theater and Black Box Theatre, plus 1–2 shows annually through Alluvion Stage Company, the department’s professional production arm. The program also participates in national and regional events such as the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), Virginia Theatre Association, and Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC), offering visibility and opportunities beyond campus.

Students benefit from layered experiential pathways such as Alluvion Stage Company, the on‑campus showcase theatre that grants resume-worthy professional credits, and participation in the departmental chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honors society. Additional enrichment comes through programs like the Washington Fellowship, which places students in internships in Washington or New York, and involvement in student‑written and original works—such as the creation and performance of Bloodroot: The Ballad of Clinch Mountain—that reflect both creative ambition and faith-inspired storytelling.

Graduates of Liberty’s Theatre Arts Department move into careers as actors, directors, playwrights, drama ministers, designers, stage managers, or pursue further graduate study—all while grounding their craft in a biblical framework and reflective storytelling. With its integration of faith, comprehensive coursework, practical stage experience, and professional-level opportunities, Liberty’s Theatre Arts program prepares students to pursue theatre with a mission‑driven purpose.
