Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

About
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, emerging from the historic Birmingham School of Acting, is now fully integrated into Birmingham City University and consistently ranked among the UK’s top institutions for drama and dance. Located in Birmingham’s bustling creative quarter, the program offers a BA (Hons) in Acting, alongside degree options in Stage Management and Applied Theatre—equipping students for careers in performance, theatre education, and community-based practice.
The Acting BA curriculum is designed to combine rigorous conservatory training with creative exploration. From method acting and voice technique to movement, singing, and on-camera performance, students work in intensive small-group labs and rehearsals. Emphasis is placed on professional preparation—auditions, portfolio development, scene work, and text analysis—guided by industry-experienced tutors and guest practitioners. Graduates emerge as versatile actors capable of performing in theatre, screen, and related media.
Applied Theatre is offered as a BA (Hons) pathway, focusing on theatre-making within schools, communities, health settings, and other social contexts. Students gain expertise in devising, facilitation, and participatory performance—learning not only how to make theatre but also why it matters for social engagement and education. Professional placements and capstone projects with local partner organizations are integral to the program.
Performances and training take place in cutting-edge facilities across multiple campus locations such as Ruskin Hall in Bournville and the Digbeth performance studios, all part of a purpose-built arts center. The Conservatoire boasts multiple rehearsal spaces, a black-box studio, and world-class technical infrastructure. Students also regularly perform in historic city venues like the Old Rep Theatre and engage directly with Birmingham’s vibrant arts scene.
Graduates leave with professional-quality performance credits, portfolios, and extensive vocational experience. Alumni have successfully transitioned to roles in West End, regional theatres, television, and work in community arts and education initiatives. The Conservatoire’s location in the UK’s second-largest city, combined with strong industry partnerships and creative innovation, makes it a compelling choice for aspiring theatre-makers and practitioners.
