About

Westminster University’s Theatre Arts program offers students a highly collaborative and immersive liberal arts experience. With small class sizes, faculty actively guide each student to explore their creative potential through experimentation, performance, and design. The program encourages artistic risk-taking and values bold, innovative work that engages with both personal and cultural perspectives.

Practical training is central to the program—students work in two distinct performance spaces: a proscenium theatre and a black-box studio. They participate in a full season of productions that includes classics, contemporary works, devised pieces, and musicals. Hands-on learning extends from acting and directing to set construction, costume design, and technical operations.

Westminster Theatre students produce four major shows each academic year, as well as a one-act festival and the longstanding Classical Greek Theatre Festival. These productions frequently involve students working alongside affiliated companies, such as the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival and Pinnacle Acting Company. This collaboration expands learning opportunities and connects students to the regional arts scene.

Students begin performing from their first year, taking on roles both onstage and off. As undergraduates progress, they may apply for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) track, which involves audition-based entry and focuses on either Performance or Technical Theatre. Those who follow the standard Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) track continue as theatre majors with varied opportunities. Many also intern or study with partner organizations, gaining valuable real-world experience.

The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, preparing students not only for theatre careers but also for graduate work or roles in arts management, education, or related fields. The recent expansion of Jewett Center and Gillmor Hall provides state-of-the-art rehearsal spaces, costume and scene shops, private practice rooms, and performance halls—all tailored to support experiential learning and artistic growth.
