About

UWF’s Department of Theatre offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with three audition-only specializations: Acting, Musical Theatre, and Design & Technology. Admission to these tracks requires a successful audition in the chosen area. The department also offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre and a Theatre minor, both of which are more flexible and do not require auditions, making them ideal for students interested in combining theatre with other academic pursuits.

The BFA Acting track provides intensive performance training, including voice, movement, classical and contemporary technique, scene study, and audition skills. The BFA Musical Theatre specialization blends acting, singing, and dancing, supported by private voice lessons and performance opportunities in major musicals. The BFA Design & Technology track offers hands-on training in scenic, costume, lighting, and sound design, as well as stage management, with practical experience through coursework and production work.

The BA in Theatre is designed for students who want a broad foundation in theatre arts without the intensive specialization of the BFA. It includes core classes in acting, directing, theatre history, and technical theatre, and allows for electives in playwriting, dramaturgy, or interdisciplinary studies. The Theatre minor provides a well-rounded experience, including courses in acting, stagecraft, and participation in productions, and is ideal for students majoring in other fields.

Training occurs in the Center for Fine & Performing Arts, which houses a 400-seat proscenium theatre and a black box studio theatre. Students are involved in a full season of productions and can participate in performance or backstage roles from their first semester. The faculty are experienced professionals who bring current industry knowledge into the classroom and rehearsal hall.

UWF’s theatre program is known for its personalized instruction, practical experience, and commitment to student development. With small class sizes, individualized mentorship, and a strong emphasis on professional readiness, the program prepares graduates for careers in acting, design, directing, arts management, and education.
