About

Johnson County Community College’s Theatre Program is situated within its Performing Arts department and primarily designed to prepare students for transfer to four-year theatre degrees. The college holds over 60 formal transfer agreements, making it a strong pathway for students planning to continue theatre studies at in-state institutions or beyond. The department also serves general students looking for an introduction to theatre arts without credit-bearing commitment.

The curriculum offers a broad selection of acting and production courses, including Introduction to Theater, Fundamentals of Acting, Acting I & II, Voice and Speech, Stage Makeup, Costume Construction, Movement for the Stage, Stage Directing and Management, and Technical Practicum. Production practicum courses enable students to earn credit by participating in real campus productions as performers or crew.

JCCC Theatre produces four to five mainstage productions per season, staged in venues such as the Bodker Black Box Theatre and the 440-seat Polsky Theatre in the Midwest Trust Center. These performances are complemented by smaller works, student-directed pieces, and technical production opportunities, providing comprehensive hands-on experience.

Students benefit from faculty mentorship and a strong support structure, with class sizes typically below 25, allowing for individualized attention. The program also encourages participation in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, with students previously competing in Irene Ryan auditions and submitting original work for adjudication.

Beyond coursework, the theatre department supports internships and career preparation through partnerships with local theatre companies, professional facilities, and production staff. This practical infrastructure is reinforced by well-equipped scene, paint, and costume shops, backstage suites, and rehearsal spaces—all located within accessible campus facilities.
