About

The theatre program at Ouachita Baptist University offers a faith-integrated, liberal arts approach to theatre education, combining rigorous artistic training with a Christian worldview. Housed within the School of Fine Arts, the program is dedicated to cultivating students as skilled theatre artists, thoughtful storytellers, and servant-leaders. Through both academic study and practical performance experience, students are encouraged to explore how the performing arts can reflect truth, foster empathy, and serve their communities.

Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts, with options to concentrate in performance, musical theatre, or design and production. The curriculum includes courses in acting, directing, stagecraft, theatre history, script analysis, and technical theatre. Students also have the opportunity to engage in playwriting, voice and movement, stage management, and lighting or scenic design, allowing them to tailor their education to their individual interests and career goals.

A core strength of the program is its vibrant production season, which includes four mainstage shows each academic year. These productions range from musicals and classical dramas to contemporary plays and student-directed works. Participation in these productions gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in performance, design, technical support, and stage management. All students are encouraged to audition and contribute, regardless of their class year.

Ouachita’s theatre facilities include Verser Theatre and Jones Performing Arts Center, both of which offer professional-quality performance and technical spaces. These venues support a variety of productions and foster collaboration across the theatre, music, and dance programs. Students benefit from close mentorship by faculty who are not only accomplished theatre professionals but also committed to spiritual and personal growth.

Overall, the theatre program at Ouachita Baptist University prepares students to excel in graduate school, professional theatre, education, or ministry. With its strong focus on artistry, faith, and service, the program provides a supportive environment where students can develop their craft while exploring the transformative power of theatre.
