Tonkinese refers to the culture, language, and people originating from Tonkin, a northern region of modern-day Vietnam that was previously part of French Indochina. Migrant workers from Tonkin often moved across Pacific islands under colonial labor agreements during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
