Introduction
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1938, Robert Cohen is a director, professor, translator, drama critic, playwright, acting theorist, and author. He served as the founding departmental chair of drama at the University of California, Irvine for 25 years and in 2015 became an emeritus Bren Fellow and Claire Trevor Professor of Drama for the University. Cohen is best known for his creation of the “GOTE” system for acting, which is derived from the work of Chekov and Meisner. Currently, Cohen lives with his wife, Lorna, in Laguna Beach, California and has two children, Michael and Whitney.

- 1965 - Cohen earns a Doctorate in Fine Arts (DFA) from the Yale School of Drama.
- 1999 - Cohen is awarded the Career Achievement Award in Academic Theater from the Association for Theater in Higher Education.
