Hot cornbread, you are crazy about me! But, ya know. There would be problems in our relationship. In case you didn’t notice, I’m an Asian. A delightful, All-American Asian. But an Asian nevertheless. My skin is a different color than yers. My eyes are set aslant. And I’ll never be able ta become a blond and look nat’ral. You might feel peculiar ‘bout me, don’t kid yourself. Back in Ioway, ‘spite my peaches ‘n’ pearl personality, people weren’t always open-armed ta me. Like when they stink-bombed our house ‘cause we’re the only Asian family on the block Heck, Honey Snodgrass herself—as great as she is now—never had much ta do with me. She jes’ became my bes’ friend when I wuz the only one who’d join her trav’lling ta the North Atlantic. But I came anyway. I guess…’cause I’m jes’ a girl who can’t say “No.”
