A bloody Messerschmitt put a cannon shell in our tailplane – we went straight down in a dive – I heard Dusty on the intercom – He said – ‘I thought I’d bought it, Skipper, but I’m all right – I’m all right!’

When we took off and saw that kite on fire, I didn’t think: ‘There are friends of mine in that.’ I thought –
