Christ, you’ve got to admit he really was a bastard in many ways! I know he was drinking heavily--I know--I know all that! But for Christ’s sake to walk away deliberately when your wife’s going to have your baby in the middle of bloody nowhere--I mean to say, to do that deliberately, that’s some kind of bloody-mindedness.
[... …] And I’ve thought maybe--course it was bloody minded of him. I’m not denying that!--but maybe being the kind of man he was, you know, with that strange gift he had, I’ve thought maybe--well, maybe he had to have his own way of facing things…
