Text

NELLIE:
(Praying) Forgive me!

When they tried to get the needle in, I had a contraction and they had to stop.
Three times.

[CATHERINE holds her tablet, staring at it, as if bracing herself. She types, speaking with difficulty as she does so.

CATHERINE:
Contractions made it hard to find the heart. Scared they’d get the wrong baby. Will you call me – please?! C x]

NELLIE continues praying.

I thought they’d give me something for the pain, but they didn’t.

I closed my eyes and prayed for the soul of baby B.

She looks up, pleadingly.

Dear God...What if you set out to do something good – but had to do something bad to make that happen?

What if you commit a terrible sin...but for a wonderful reason?
