My mother left my father when I was four. After she left, my Dad didn’t have the energy to pick me up, so he started using our photo albums as step stools—they were everywhere—in the bathroom, by the sink, next to the refrigerator, by the doors. I keep receipts instead of photos. When things don’t work out, you just recycle.
