Description

An all-star lineup of Grammy-winning vocalists and some of today’s most charismatic, artistically diverse performers gather to honor folk music legend Joni Mitchell. Join Renée Fleming, Lalah Hathaway, Aoife O’Donovan, and Jimmie Herrod for "Love", a heartfelt tribute showcasing the beauty and wisdom of Mitchell’s music. The one-of-a-kind concert will be led by six-time Grammy Award winner and 25-time nominee Vince Mendoza — who won two Grammys for his arrangement of “Both Sides Now,” from Mitchell’s album of the same name, and for “Woodstock” from "Travelogue". Renée Fleming on this performance: “Joni Mitchell, legendary songwriter, performer, and genre omnivore, has been a touchstone for me since the day a friend pressed the "Hissing of Summer Lawns" LP into my hands in high school. It’s telling that other great singer/songwriters from a variety of genres consistently want to perform her songs, and have had huge successes with them. Songs like “Woodstock” and “Both Sides Now” are woven into the DNA of contemporary popular music. To celebrate her with the National Symphony Orchestra is such a rare opportunity, especially with this lineup of artists. Joni’s fellow Canadian Rufus Wainwright is also her friend, and he even wrote a song on his new album as an homage to her. The fantastic British singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae won her first Grammy award singing a Joni Mitchell song. And I’ve already had the pleasure of singing with the brilliant folk and bluegrass artist Aoife O’Donovan on "Prairie Home Companion". All of us, from our varied musical traditions, will be singing the orchestrations of Vince Mendoza, under his baton. The album they created together, "Travelogue", is epic. I believe this will be a concert to remember.”
