Description

Picture it: Long Beach, 1911. Architect Ben Sholes and wife Tennie chat about the time the community came together to build a school in a day. Around the same time, Valentine Leal, a skilled builder, came to California with his family and helped organize a union to protect Mexican and Mexican American workers from predatory Henry Huntington. Now, picture yourself listening to costumed actors in period appropriate costumes tell these stories in Sunnyside and Municipal Cemeteries, two of the city's oldest. On Saturday, October 29th the Historical Society of Long Beach presents the 26th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour. Patrons will enjoy a SELF-GUIDED tour with the option to see 8 graveside performances, Dia de los Muertos ofrendas, Japanese American Stories through "Art of Gaman: Healing with Creativity," the Black Student Union Elders Association commemorates African American scholars and community pioneers who promoted diversity/inclusion at CSULB, historical presentations and displays, a historical costume contest hosted by LB Living, and a Meet the Authors tent.
