Context
Jack Tanner has come to see Roebuck Ramsden with a copy of the late Mr. Whitehead's will. Tanner has just found out that he and Ramsden have been made joint guardians of Whitehead's daughter, Ann, and he is not happy about it. Tanner does not particularly like Ann and he does not want the responsibility of being her guardian. Also present is Octavius Robinson, a friend of the Whitehead family and desperately in love with Ann. He urges Tanner to be mindful of his responsibilities towards Ann.

TANNER. Ramsden: do you know what that is?
RAMSDEN. [loftily] No, Sir.
TANNER. It's a copy of Whitefield's will. Ann got it this morning.
RAMSDEN. When you say Ann, you mean, I presume, Miss Whitefield.
TANNER. I mean our Ann, your Ann, Tavy's Ann, and now, Heaven help me, my Ann!
OCTAVIUS. [rising, very pale] What do you mean?
