Context
Old Ma Gwynn and her eldest daughter, Rose, have come to the Palace to see their daughter/sister, Nell Gwynn. Nell has been the favorite mistress of King Charles II for several years. She is now well established at Court, with her own apartment at the Palace. She is ashamed of her background and her ‘common’ family, and has neglected her mother. She is astounded they have come to Court and is embarrassed by their presence. Nell sends money but never visits or pays them any attention. Nell tries
