Context
Nagg and Nell are an old married couple and the parents of Hamm, a disillusioned man who is in perpetual pain and blindness, and confined to a chair. Nagg and Nell live in two dustbins that are set next to each other. Within each dustbin, sand is a primitive cushioning for them, and they do their best to entertain themselves and each other. NELL: What is it, my pet? (Pause.) Time for love?
NAGG: Were you asleep?
NELL: Oh no!
NAGG: Kiss me.

NAGG: ... “But my dear Sir, my dear Sir, look - (disdainful gesture, disgustedly) - at the world - (Pause.) and look - (loving gesture, proudly) - at my TROUSERS!” (Pause. He looks at Nell who has remained impassive, her eyes unseeing. He breaks into a high forced laugh, cuts it short, pokes his head towards Nell, launches his laugh again.)
