Context
Arlene is just paroled from prison, and it hasn’t been a day before her former pimp Carl finds her (after breaking out of jail himself). He shows up, expecting that he’ll take her to New York City and pimp her out again. In this scene, Carl returns a day after Arlene turns him away. He again starts trying to convince Arlene to leave Louisville, forget her parole, and join him to make money on the streets. Arlene, however, is determined to remake her life and reunite with her son.
