Context
Willie has come up out of his hole for a brief visit with Winnie. After reading the newspaper, he is crawling his way back, and Winnie relentlessly nags him as he goes. Once he is back in his hole, she insists that he respond to her so that she knows that he can hear her. Sensing that she has offended him with her babbling, Winnie explains that she needs to know that she can be heard while she speaks, in order to give her comfort and stave off dread.

End: WINNIE: [...] not to say anything I would not wish you to hear or liable to cause you pain, not to be just babbling away on trust as it is were not knowing and something gnawing at me. [Pause for breath.] Doubt.
