Context
In the final moment of the play, Willie - who has not been seen since Act One - emerges from behind the mound dressed in a tuxedo. Winnie is delighted to see him, and cheers him on as he attempts to climb the mound on his hands and knees. He is too weak to make it to the top, and slides back down. It is not clear whether Willie is trying to reach Winnie, who is buried up to her neck in the mound, or the revolver that is sitting next to her, in order to take his own life.
