The Miss Firecracker Contest opens in the living room of Carnelle Scott’s late aunt Ronelle, in the house where Carnelle still lives. She is deep in rehearsal for her talent performance in the beauty pageant she hopes to win in her small southern town, and the seamstress she has hired to help with her costumes arrives for a first fitting. Popeye Jackson is strange, almost alien-like, but with an immediate adoration of Carnelle that validates Carnelle’s eager need for connection. The two get
