LUNA We went to the Painted Desert, and when we got out of the van to take pictures, his brother Davey started running -
EVAN He was fast. Had those chicken legs.
LUNA And his mom took a picture of me and him and his sister Jackie standing in front of a giant boulder, and way off behind us in the distance, there’s Davey running. Full stride. Just a speck in a red t-shirt but you can see his long legs stretched out, pounding the sand, the sunset burning behind him. Sometimes I wonder if he was running from something? What if the same something’s chasing us? That picture makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I’ve never liked it.
EVAN Hung on the fridge for years.
LUNA Right beside the piled up dirty dishes from your bedroom.
EVAN And our empty Pepsi cans -
LUNA and pickle jars –
EVAN -leftover from watching midnight monster movies and old Ray Adams’ used car commercials. That dude looked just like Vincent Price, I swear. (mimicking the TV commercial) He’ll put your right side up in a Toyota Corolla!
LUNA I think we should run, Evan.
