It’s an average shopping day in Walmart when, suddenly, all the adults in the store disappear. William was shopping with his sister, Jane, when their nanny disappeared, while Lacy and her brother Joey lost their father. William and Lacey are friends at school, but they come from very different social backgrounds. Lacey misses her father already and she wonders if William feels the same.

LACEY: Are you scared, William?
WILLIAM: A little. I wish I knew what was going on.
LACEY: And if they’ll ever come back.
WILLIAM: Yeah.
LACEY: I miss my parents already.
WILLIAM: I don’t really.
LACEY: You don’t?
WILLIAM: I mean, no parents is kinda normal for us. It’s weird that Mrs. Johnson and the cashiers and stuff are all gone, but my parents are always working and traveling so we don’t really see them anyways.
LACEY: That’s so sad.
