PC Percy: Oh great, it’s you....

PC Percy: (Sternly and unsympathetically) Oh great, it’s you.

Jude: (Looks at him in desperation) Help me… Help me.

PC Percy: (He pauses for a moment, before turning and begins to walk away).

Jude: (Sobbing) Please! I don’t know what to do.

(PC Percy stops and takes a deep breath, before slowly turning around).

PC Percy: (Scolding) Well missy, you’ve got nobody to blame but yourself! This is all YOUR fault.

Jude: I know… I wish I’d never changed things. Everything was fine just the way it was.

(PC Percy helps Jude to her feet).

PC Percy: (A little more sympathetic) Things were pretty good… I suppose.

Jude: I was stupid to open my big, fat mouth.

PC Percy: There’s a lot of stupid people in this world… but you’re NOT one of them! (In a friendlier tone) Believe it or not, some people think I should keep my big, stupid mouth shut!

(Jude gives a snorty giggle. PC Percy pulls out his handkerchief and gives it to Jude, who then blows her nose loudly. She keeps hold of the handkerchief).

PC Percy: You know, when I was younger, I wanted to change the world too.

Jude: You? What happened?

PC Percy: I don’t know, I kept being knocked back by grumpy, old pricks who thought they knew better… and then, I become one myself! I suppose… There’s a lot of people threatened by you!

Jude: Me? Why?

PC Percy: You’re young… and ambitious… You see what’s wrong and try to make it better. A lot of people don’t like change.

Jude: It hasn’t done me much good has it!

PC Percy: (Supportively) You can’t give up now. I may not understand what you’re doing, but things are changing for the better… thanks to you.

Jude: (Proudly) You really think so.

PC Percy: And people seem to really like you. They listen to you. Everybody hates me (Begins to get upset) I have feelings too! It’s not easy being an old chauvinistic pig!

(Jude hands him back the handkerchief. PC Percy takes it and gives a loud blow, before putting it back in his pocket. He then wipes his hand on his trousers).

PC Percy: (Pulls out a fistful of dollar notes and hands them to her) Here, this is yours… I’m sorry.

Bobby: (Calls from off stage) Jude!

(PC Percy rushes off, just as Bobby appears. Bobby is wearing his police uniform).

Bobby: Jude, are you OK?

Jude: (Composes herself) I’m going to be just fine.

(They walk off stage left. The scene fades into the next).
