Context
Following her commencement, Rosa picnicked with friends (and her boyfriend Jack Hunter) at Diamond Key. When the two were alone, Rosa made clear her sexual intentions, but Jack made a promise to Serafina, as he knelt in front of her statue of the Virgin Mary, that he would protect Rosa’s innocence. Rosa is bitter at her mother for this promise, and heartbroken that Jack is leaving the following day.
