CURSOR Orange, you have been sworn in, and been made aware of the repercussions of lying under oath, correct?

ORANGE Oh, yes.

CURSOR Are you ready for your first question?

ORANGE When you are.

CURSOR You heard HCU Blue’s testimony just now?

ORANGE Yes, I did! He seems very excited. I guess HCUs do hold on to some emotions. It’s pretty darn impressive, I think. What they-all can do nowdays.

CURSOR What’s your purpose in having a Hypercorporeal Unit set up for you?

ORANGE I don’t understand the question.

CURSOR Why would you want this set up for yourself?

ORANGE I didn’t set it up, my family did.

CURSOR How long ago?

ORANGE When I was born. In the area where I grew up, it was just something everyone did.

CURSOR It was a status thing.

ORANGE Well, “status” is your word. Don’t try to paint this as an elitist thing, it’s an insult to us all. How about everyone in my neighborhood loved their children and wanted them to have the ability to be a part of their families indefinitely?

CURSOR So you believe in the concept of HCUs.

ORANGE I think it’s a fantastic idea.

CURSOR Is this a way for you to live on? Gain immortality.

ORANGE Nonsense. It’s me in the ground. It’s me who gets to find out if there’s a God.

CURSOR But you want this to happen? You want to transfer?

ORANGE Absolutely. Look at all the good that HCU Blue has done. I’d like to do some of that good. Sure.

CURSOR Are you being serious?

ORANGE I’m sorry?

CURSOR Are you being serious? If you’re mocking the court--

ORANGE No. No. Well, maybe a little, yes, but...

(beat)

I’ve had some time to think about this. And maybe if my HCU can...I suppose “do good” sounds a bit hokey. But maybe if my HCU spends a few decades on the planet, I might...I could be remembered as something else.

CURSOR You think an HCU would clear your name?

ORANGE (beat) You know how many major companies that are still in existence, still powerful, even today...How many of them started out as basically criminal enterprises, who built their stock on slave labor, or brutality? I’ll tell you: All of them. And still we buy. We forgive with our currency.

CURSOR Are you saying that you’d be forgiven?

ORANGE I’m saying people forget.

CURSOR (beat) Step down, for now, Orange. We now call Green to the stand.
