Context
Just before this scene, many secrets have been laid bare: Big Daddy is dying of cancer. Big Mama and Big Daddy prefer their younger son Brick over his brother Gooper--perhaps they even hate Gooper. And Maggie has declared that she is pregnant, a claim that Mae (Gooper’s wife) calls a lie. In this scene, Gooper is ready to call it a night and go to bed, but Mae wants to argue with Maggie about her pregnancy.
