Context
In a post-apocalyptic world, Bern and Elena are exiled from their village as they are no longer of child-bearing age and are therefore deemed useless by a dictatorial Laird. They have been cast out into a freezing, desolate landscape. In this first scene of the play, the two women are poles apart in their acceptance of the situation.
