Context
In No man’s land between the British and German lines, the horse Joey is trapped in barbed wire. On the British side, Geordie calls to him in English. On the German side, Manfred calls in German. Both sides wave a white flag, and the two men approach Joey. Although brief, and between two minor characters, this moment is an important show of civility between enemies, even during a war.
