Context
Manus, the son of the local school teacher, is teaching Sarah, a local woman with a severe speech defect, to say her name. Also present is Jimmy Jack Cassie, an educated and eccentric bachelor in his sixties who is reading ancient Greek. Jimmy punctuates the private lesson with random quotes and passages which he reads aloud. Manus is waiting for his father. Hugh, who should be present to start the next lesson. START: MANUS: We’re doing very well. And we’re going to try it once more--just once more. Now--relax and breathe in…deep…and out…in…and out…
(Sarah shakes her head vigorously and stubbornly)
MANUS: Come on, Sarah. This is our secret.
(Again vigorous and stubborn shaking of Sarah’s head)
MANUS: Nobody’s listening. Nobody hears you.

SARAH: Flowers.
MANUS: You see?--you’re off!
(Manus leans down and kisses the top of Sarah’s head)
