PETER

I don’t want you to feel responsible.

(He sips the coffee as he looks into her eyes. (Laura pours herself coffee and sits across from him at the kitchen table.)

LAURA

I never thought I’d hear you say that. I don’t know why things are this way with us, Dad. I tried – and you know that this has been terrible on me, too. Mom thinks I favor you. Your new wife thinks I want her out of the picture. And you—you’re all over the map about my place now in your life. For God’s sakes – I’m neutral! It’s not my marriage. It’s not my divorce! Between all of you, it’s been a madhouse. You know, there were times I felt like getting you, Mom and your new wife in a boxing ring and letting the three of you fight it out.

PETER

Laura, just listen. The way I see it, is that my wife wants me all to herself. I love her, but this is ridiculous. I told her if she doesn’t want to see my family, I’m coming out without her.

LAURA

How did she take it?

PETER

You can imagine. I just wish you hadn’t involved your husband in this.

LAURA

Why, Dad? Don’t you think he knows what’s been going on all along? He’s my husband! Don’t you and your wife do everything together?

PETER

It only created more hard feelings.

(He sips more coffee.)

LAURA

He chose to get involved and express his disdain to you last month.
