MR. GRIMSBY

It looks like you’ve acquired some family members. How many Taylors you got here, now?

COREY JEAN

They ain’t family, they’re friends.

MR. GRIMSBY

They don’t look like they’re from around here, that’s for sure.

(to COREY)

Where are you from?

COREY

None of your business!

MR. GRIMSBY

Not family, huh? Coulda fooled me. She’s got that ten toothed Taylor attitude down pat.

REESE

Darn tootin!

MR. GRIMSBY

You two staying here with Corey Jean and her family?

COREY

We haven’t talked about that yet.

COREY JEAN

(puts her arm around COREY) Of course they can stay. What’s it to you, Mr. Grimsby?

MR. GRIMSBY

You sure you got room for everyone in that shoebox you call a house?

COREY JEAN

We got everything we need, don’t you worry.

MR. GRIMSBY

Oh, I’m not worried—not for me, anyway. Now that sagging roof and cracked foundation—that worries me.

BILLIE

What are you doing here, Mr. Grimsby?

MR. GRIMSBY

Well, Billie, I came to see if you’re mamma’s finally come to her senses and has agreed to sell her land to me.

COREY JEAN

I wouldn’t count on it.

(COREY JEAN looks towards the front porch or offstage. If there is a porch, the front door suddenly swings open, to reveal MA, who stands menacingly, holding a frying pan. If no porch, then MA enters and stops, standing as noted.)

MA

Grimsby!

MR. GRIMSBY

(takes a step back and holds his hands up in surrender) Now, Mrs. Taylor, there’s no reason to get violent.

MA

I told you what would happen if you stepped foot on my property again, Grimsby.

(takes a menacing step toward him)

MR. GRIMSBY

I’m just here as a friend, Mrs. Taylor.

MA

Friend? I don’t think so.

(starts to pick up the pace as she chases Mr. GRIMSBY)

GRIMSBY

(as he evades MA) I’m only trying to help, Mrs. Taylor. You and I both know this property is too much for you to handle on your own.

MA

On my own? I haven’t been on my own a day in my life. I stayed at home with my Ma and Pa until the day I married Mr. Taylor. And from the moment he carried me across the threshold of this here home, I opened my door wide to all who needed a place to stay.

COREY JEAN

And there have been a lot who needed a place to stay.
