In the opening scene of the play, we are introduced to the three women: A, B, and C. A is an elderly woman who employs B to look after her. A is quarrelsome, forgetful, and disgruntled, although she enjoys finding humor in some of the darker moments. C, who is much younger than the other two, is disturbed by A’s frail, elderly condition. Start: A: (An announcement from nowhere; to no one in particular) I’m ninety-one.
B: (Pause) Is that so?
A: (Pause) Yes.
C: (Small smile) You’re ninety-two.
