Bartley rushes in making preparations to leave. Maurya scolds him, and tries to stop him leaving. He has to go today, it is last boat for several weeks and he needs to sell the horses at the fair. As Maurya starts to explain the bad omens she has seen. that have convinced her that Bartley should not go, contradicting the priest’s religious message with long-established pagan beliefs, Bartley is all business and instructs his sisters on the necessary tasks while he is away.
