Context
Tom is home on leave from the army, along with local lad Ralph. He has come to his cousin May’s home, where he has lived for several years. May’s lodger, Eva, is Ralph’s girlfriend and they are currently upstairs in her bedroom. May is nervous that she shouldn’t have let Ralph stay and worries that the neighbors will hear. Despite their age difference, May and Tom are in love with each other, but neither can say it out loud. May cannot let herself go and give in to her feelings for Tom, which

START: May: Can’t you sleep?
Tom: I just thought I’d sit in the kitchen.
[She looks up at the ceiling, nervously, then sits at the table. Another burst of laughter from upstairs.]
May: Whatever shall I do? I shouldn’t have let them, should I? I said to him: Ralph, it’s even o’clock. He says: Right, I’m going and then trots off up the stairs.

[May comes to him. He clings to her.]
Tom: I can’t draw spirit…I can only draw your face…and your body…
May: If I’d only known you now! If I’d only known you as you are now. Why did you have to come here as a boy?
