Context
Henrietta Leavitt returned to her family home from Harvard University because her father was ill. He has since passed away, and rather than return to Cambridge right away, she is staying with her sister. During this time, Harvard’s lab has been sending her photographic plates so that she may continue to observe and record data, and in addition to her regular work, Henrietta is working on observations of cepheid stars, sure that their changing luminosities mean something important to science.
