Context
Louka, though defiant and scornful of her subservient role, is a maid in the Petkoff household. Sergius, a dashing and wealthy young man, a Major in the Bulgarian army who has just returned triumphantly from war, is engaged to Raina, the daughter of the house. After a tender reunion scene with Raina, Sergius is left to his own devices for several minutes, and seeks a rambunctious flirtation with Louka as a respite from his “higher love”.
