Eileen. Mom, are you feeling ok?
Joan. No sweetie, I’m not feeling well. (grabs her hand) Listen baby, I’m sorry about what I said to you. You were right. I need to get over that stuff. I’m going to try to slow down on the drinking and get my life back in order.
Eileen. I’m proud of you Mom. You are going to be ok
Joan. I remember that you were trying to tell me something. It seemed like something was bothering you and you needed to talk to me.
Eileen. Yes, mom. There’s something I want to say. (takes a deep breath) I’m gay. I like girls.
Joan. Are you sure? Maybe you are just confused. How do you know for sure?
Eileen. Well, when I see pretty girls, I get these tingles all over and when I see handsome boys, I don’t.
Joan. I see. So if you know this about yourself, what’s the problem?
Eileen. I’m scared to tell my friends. I’m afraid they won’t be friends with me anymore.
Joan. Well then you’ll have to make new friends. You need to be who you are. You can’t be anything else. So if they don’t like it, then you’ll have to move on. But you know what, they may surprise you.
Eileen. You’re right mom, I need to get this done and live my life.
Joan. Is that why you got in a fight?
Eileen. Yes
Joan. Was it with a girl that you like?
Eileen. Yes it was. I was terrible to her.
Joan. Well then go make it right. You are a grown girl. Live your life sweetheart and don’t apologize for it. Except for fighting with your friend, you should apologize for that. (they laugh)
Eileen. I did already. Thanks Mom!
Joan. You’re welcome sweetheart. I’m not feeling too well right now. I’m going to lie down for a little while. (Eileen kisses her moms forehead)
Eileen. I love you mom. (Eileen walks away but looks back with concern.)
